(USA) International Paper Co. was established on Tonawanda Island in 1924. The firm produced fine grades of paper, including books, writing papers, tablets, coating and offset printing papers.
Tonawanda Mill was the dream of Warren Curtis and was made into reality through the engineering genius of Julius Jaeger and his son, George. Under the direction of Curtis and the Chicago Tribune, in 1924 Tonawanda Mill began to produce the cover and text sheets for Liberty Magazine. In 1929 the Chicago Tribune sold Liberty Magazine to the McFadden Publishing Co. and Tonawanda Mill lost its customer. After two years of minimal operations, Tonawanda Mill was sold to International Paper Co. and incorporated into the family of the world’s largest producer of quality paper.
