(Europe) August was a reasonably balanced month for Newsprint both in terms of demand and total European shipments. Demand dipped only slightly by -1.1% or just 10,000 tonnes. Total European shipments remained stable with 0.5% growth compared to August last year, despite the 31%
rise in overseas shipments during the same month. Imports, especially from North America, continued the strong increase already seen during the course of the year.
The magazine sector, both for coated and uncoated papers, enjoyed a very positive month in August, starting earlier than usual the seasonally strong period leading to the end of the year. Demand for SC Magazine climbed 7.6% to reach 343,000 tonnes: the highest level on record for the month of August. Considering the strong domestic demand, total exports for the January to August period remain relatively
solid with just a -2.0% dip year-on-year. Coated Mechanical Reels followed a similar pattern to SC last month. A 6.3% rise in European demand signed an all-time high level for the month of August, as well as the strongest level demand reached during the course of 2007. On the export side, the 16% drop in the eigth-month period is largely due to reduced paper availability following the over one million tonnes of
capacity closures that took place over the past fifteen months.
On the other hand, figures for Other Uncoated Mechanical grades were down in August. Demand slipped by -8.6%, with the year-to-date figure at -4.3%.
