OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA--Sept. 19, 2008-- Loblaw Companies Ltd. has teamed up with Tree Canada, the country's largest tree planting organization, to reduce its impact on the environment.
This summer, Loblaw customers across Canada began to see a new change in their grocery flyers. They are now a newly trimmed size with the same great savings..
By designing and printing trimmer flyers, Loblaw will be saving 5,200 metric tons of paper and more than 82,000 trees destined for paper mills each year. Continuing with its environmental ethic, Loblaw in partnership with Tree Canada, will plant 82,332 trees across Canada next spring in five regions: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and British Columbia. The tree species will vary due to putting the "right tree in the right place."
"We are pleased that a major corporation is taking the initiative to look at its operations honestly and find ways to reduce waste," said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. "Some companies think that going "green" is complex, taking a lot of time and money. But this project shows even the simplest of changes can have far-reaching effects on our environment."
"We are thrilled to be partnering with Tree Canada," comments Inge van den Berg, Vice President, Public Affairs & Investor Relations, Loblaw Companies Limited. "This is just another great step towards protecting our trees and reducing unnecessary waste - at Loblaw we will continue to identify new ways to do our part for our planet and we are proud to add this new relationship to our growing list of corporate social responsibility initiatives."
