The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) [1] has announced that it is to hold the latest in its series of seminars, entitled, “Responsible Paper Procurement-Good for Business and the Environment”, the seminar is designed to provide a better understanding of the PEFC programme and Chain of Custody and certification issues for those working in a range of disciplines within the print and publishing sectors; printers, print buyers, and corporate social responsibility practitioners manufacturing and trading in wood-based products.

Even in these challenging economic times, companies still need to remember they need to adhere to their environmental responsibilities to meet the demands of their environmentally conscious consumers and end-users.

The seminar is to be held in The El Alamein Room at The Victory Services Club in the heart of London’s West End on Wednesday 17 June 2009, and participation is Free of Charge.

The seminar will begin with a buffet lunch at 1pm, followed by a selection of speakers who will provide an insight into their own subject matter and then participate in a moderated panel discussion which will conclude proceedings at around 5.00pm.

Speakers include Ross Bradshaw, Director-PEFC UK, Jonathan Tame-Howard Smith Paper Group, Gary Smith-Redactive Media Group, Elaine Pooke-English Heritage and Alasdair McGregor-BM TRADA.

They will discuss issues such as Responsible Paper Procurement for UK Magazine Publishers and UK Book Publishers, Chain of Custody certification, PEFC certification and the increasing demand for certified paper in the print and publishing sectors.

PEFC is now the world’s largest sustainable forest management certification2 scheme.

Two thirds of the word’s certified forests are managed by PEFC-endorsed certification systems, delivering millions of tones of certified wood products to trading and processing companies.

26% of the world’s industrial roundwood is currently certified, the majority of it to PEFC-endorsed certification schemes.

Editors’ Notes

[1] PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes)
PEFC is a framework for the mutual recognition of credible national or regional forest certification schemes that have been developed based on internationally recognised requirements for sustainable forest management. Since its launch in 1999, PEFC has become the largest forest certification umbrella organisation covering national schemes from all over the world, delivering hundreds of millions of tonnes of wood to the processing industry and then on to the market place from over 220 million hectares of certified forests.

[2] Forest Certification
Forest certification is a process, which provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that the wood used in the products comes from sustainably managed forests. Sustainably managed forests are those whose management implements performance standards based on internationally agreed environmental, social and economic requirements.

[3] Chain of Custody Certification

Chain of custody certification is a mechanism for tracing certified material from the forest to the final product to provide assurances that the product or product line, about which a claim is being made, is linked to a certified forest.
