Danny Williams, the premier of Newfoundland practically ran AbitibiBowater out of the province. The “Chavez of the North” promised union members and communities that the AbitibiBowater mills would never close. At the same time he was making those promises he was openly hostile to the company. This hostility, and the promise to union members that they need not worry (he would take care of them)
