(USA/Canada) Pulp-and-paper giant AbitibiBowater Inc. said yesterday the two-year downswing in North American newsprint demand is slowing and producers are determined to keep prices rising through mid-year.

But executive chairman John Weaver said the lumber business in eastern and western Canada will stay in the gloom well into 2009 because of the deep U.S. housing slump. Prices are down about 50 per cent and more sawmill capacity is being cut.
